We’re about to hit April this week. That typically means the madness of spring fever in all its forms takes hold of Pittsburgh. Tons of shows, people and nice (enough) weather.
Looking forward to it.

Really full and fun weekend. Ended up checking out Salt, Pittsburgh Batman, Get Weird, the Pix Comix Con, and Horse Meat Disco at A-OK, then finished up the South Park game Sunday and capped it off with Bailey at Pub IG.

Here’s what’s up this week:

I still haven’t made it to this new DIY spot that seems to be booking noise and electronics, but this looks to be a good a time as any.

occult cosmic dance ritual

ILLUSIONS is a night featuring the best of new and classic dark dancefloor sounds occult techno, cosmic disco, post punk, death rock, witch house
minimal wave, shimmering bass, haunted pop, dark alternative, etc.

ILLUSIONS was founded by Greg Vaneck, Nikki Telladictorian and myself back in 2011. We all have been big fans of dark music, both old and new, but for years have lamented that there weren’t really nights that would present the sort of stuff we were most excited for. We did a few one off nights under the Burning Chrome name, which focused more on industrial and noisy stuff, but we wanted to put together something that could contain some of that, but also be accessable and dark at the same time. Thus the ILLUSIONS concept was born, combining touring acts, locals, dj and vj sets. We don’t have a set venue or schedule, but we put them together when good opportunities arise.

Mascara live set at ILLUSIONS

Mascara live set at ILLUSIONS, February 2012

We’ve had a number of great guests including Ritualz, Teeel, Mascara, Rivka, Funerals, Metria, Majeure, Night Terrors, Fogged Out, Hex Weapon, Trogpite, Bestial Mouths, WMX, Soft Metals, Night Sins, Youth Code, Troxum, Shawn Rudiman and Textbeak.   Typically we have one or two guest live acts or djs, plus sets from the residents and original video projects and space design.

Hexweapon Live at Illusions, March 2012

We’ve had editions at Cattivo (downstairs) and Brillobox, and are open to using other spaces that have the right sound and space for the night.

YOUTH CODE LIVE IN PITTSBURGH from Nikki Telladictorian on Vimeo.

Along the way I’ve also created a companion mix series, featuring the flavors of music that we’re spinning and featuring at the night.  You can check out the whole series on mixcloud:

tcrps presents a very rare evening of experimental improvised sound performance

Bromp Treb [solo percussion/electronics by Neil Young Cloaca of Fat Worm of Error: Turner Falls, MA]

Nick Hennies [solo percussion: Ithaca, NY] Michael Johnsen [solo electronics: Pgh, PA] Anthony Levin-Decanini [solo by Crucible Sound founder: Pgh, PA]

The Shop
4314 Main St.
Pittsburgh, PA 15224

BROMP TREB is the onomatopoeic flailings of Neil Young Cloaca. Composing and improvising with intentionally-unstable systems of his own devising, he joyfully uses/misues busted circuits, collaged beats, cheap effects pedals, poor drumming technique, and tape manipulation to make idiosyncratic music / nonmusic.

BROMP TREB live action:

more BROMP TREB info:

Nick Hennies is a percussionist and composer from Louisville, KY currently residing in Ithaca, NY. His work is primarily concerned with an immersive, psychoacoustic presentation of sound brought about by an often grueling, endurance-based performance practice that Nathan Thomas of Fluid Radio described as, “a highly sophisticated and refined performance technique…that starts and ends with listening and encourages a different way of listening from its audience.” He received his M.A. in percussion from the University of California-San Diego in 2003 where he studied with renowned percussionist Steven Schick and is also a member of Meridian, a percussion trio with Tim Feeney and Greg Stuart. Prior to relocating to Ithaca Hennies was based in Austin, TX for ten years where he performed with the Austin New Music Co-op, The Weird Weeds and a variety of other projects.

Hennies is also an interpreter of the work of other modern composers having recorded and performed music by John Cage, Alvin Lucier, Jandek, Peter Ablinger, Kunsu Shim, Jürg Frey, Ellen Fullman, Radu Malfatti, Arnold Dreyblatt and many others. His work as both composer and performer can be heard on a wide variety of labels including Quakebasket, Senufo Editions, Accidie, Quiet Design and many others.

In 2013 Hennies also founded the record label Weighter Recordings for releasing his own work and other new and unusual music by living composers.

Week of March 9th 2014: Blotter

By | blotter, events | No Comments

Going to try this out as a feature.   A weekly blotter of goings on, events, happenings or observations, either personal or general.  Mostly “stuff to do”  in and around Pittsburgh, unless I’m out of town or something notable is going on elsewhere.

It’s finally *starting* to become spring-like in Pittsburgh, the weather is bearable, the sun is out, you can hear birds and that means a rash of shows will be on the horizon.

A good lineup of noisy, experimental stuff.   Check the FB post for more details on all the acts.

Hardon Collider – Cincinnati glitchnoise

“Using homemade circuit-bent devices, Hardon Collider damages ears and hearts with an unrelenting storm of electronic bastardized sound. Playing numerous shows both local and abroad, Hardon Collider has cemented itself in time as being one of the greatest unknown endeavors in the history of man.”

Mike Textbeak is a dj, promoter, producer and radio show host based in Cleveland, Ohio.  He’s been around pushing the darker and experimental ends of gothic and electronic music for quite a while.  We recently had him out for our ILLUSIONS night, and he smashed it with a selection of new body music.   I recorded a mix for his weekly radio show, and it’s airing this monday at 3PM.  You can tune in live, or check the soundcloud after the show for the audio.  – cutups

Lazercrunk is a monthly night that happens 2nd Fridays at the Brillobox.   Todd Keebs and myself founded it in June of 2008.   The point was to book a mix of new artists who were doing new sounds, but still keeping it fun and unpretentious.   We’ve had a really good run, and we’re always looking to do more.

Some guests we’ve hosted include – Le Moti, Kingdom, Druid CLoak, Myrryrs, Starkey, HxDb, Distal,  Mike Q, Brenmar, Manikan, Deathface, Rizzla, Sinjin Hawke, Dev79, Eprom, Cobra Krames, Wheez-ie, B. Bravo, Clicks & Whistles, Cosmic Revenge, Murderbot, Mochipet, Udachi, B. Rich,  Freddy Todd, Dubbel Dutch, Tomb Crew, Lazersword, Kanji Kinetic, Girltalk, Designer Drugs, Emynd, Oh Snap,  Rrrump, Mathhead, Alias, Egyptrix and more.

In addition to regular guests, we try to do a unique visual set up with a theme, space transformation and a full color lazer rig.   It’s a fun night and never typical.

Got to give lots of due to the Brillobox for hosting us for nearly six years.   It’s a great venue that’s just the right size for us.  They have a kicking sound system, artful decour and a great drink selection.   Non-smoking inside, which is great.   Our night is in the upstairs “club” venue, but there’s also the downstairs which is a more social bar area.

As for DJing, her sets range stylistically from house/techno to electro to new bass sounds, so come with an open mind and broken in shoes. The dancefloor won’t be empty for this one!
