New York/Philadelphia based synth-punk, electro-wave pioneers, Crash Course in Science (Dale Feliciello, Mallory Yago and Michael Zodorozny), have been making their distinctive noise-pop dance music for quite some time. Using primitive analog drum machines and homemade synthesizers, they released their first 7” single “Cakes in the Home” in 1979. Their darker follow-up release, the influential “Signals From Pier Thirteen”, originally came out in 1981. The latter contained the underground club hits “Cardboard Lamb” and “Flying Turns”. In 2009 the band re-emerged as a live act accompanied by original producer John Wicks and the Enchantress of Bioluminosity Andrea Beeman.

A 12” picture disc of “Flying Turns” featuring remixes by Ricardo Villalobos, Einzelkind and Frost was released on Pressure Traxx Records in 2013. The track has also been remixed by Terence Fixmer, Danton Eeprom, and the band themselves, and was released as a 12” single on Terence Fixmer’s Jupiter label in 2009. “Flying Turns” remains one of Crash Course in Science’s most recognized and most licensed tracks.

Vinyl On Demand in Germany released the Crash Course in Science box set in the fall of 2009. This limited edition of 600 vinyl copies contained 3-LP’s and 1-7” single and sold out quickly. The box set contained the first appearance of the band’s previously unreleased debut album “Near Marineland”. In 2012 Vinyl On Demand re-issued the box set as a 2-CD set. The vinyl re-issue of the same set was on the UK’s Record Collectors most wanted list. “Near Marineland” and “Signals From Pier Thirteen” are now available on iTunes as well as other digital music outlets on the Schematic Records label. “Signals From Pier Thirteen” was re-issued on vinyl by San Francisco based label Dark Entries in 2014 and a 12” single version of the song “Jump Over Barrels” was released by Dark Entries in 2015 which included a remix by Charles Manier.

“Cardboard Lamb” was the ‘inspirational basis’ for the massive 2002 club hit “Bucci Bag” by Andrea Doria, borrowing heavily from the original track. “Bucci Bag” has been used as a soundtrack for red carpet arrivals, on the television shows “Entertainment Tonight” and “The Insider,” and was also included in the soundtrack to “The Sopranos” video game. The original track “Cardboard Lamb” has been remixed by Vitalic and David Carretta and was released as a 12” single on Terence Fixmer’s Planète Rouge label in 2007. “Cardboard Lamb” was included in the soundtrack of “Interior. Leather Bar.” a film by Travis Mathews & James Franco in 2014.

Crash Course in Science’s music has been included on many compilation albums over the past several years, the most notable being “The Minimal Wave Tapes Volume One” released on Stones Throw / Minimal Wave in 2010, compiled by Minimal Wave founder Veronica Vasicka and Peanut Butter Wolf. Most recently the track “Jump Over Barrels” was featured on Trevor Jackson’s Metal Dance 2 compilation.

Crash Course in Science’s European tours included appearances in Spain, Germany and Belgium in 2015, Easter Rewind Fest 2012, Rewind Mini-Fest 2010 and Bimfest 2009. In the US they have played to enthusiastic houses at venues ranging from Le Poisson Rouge NYC to the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit to Chicago’s Empty Bottle.

Interesting art/experimental show at Modern Formations…

__Muyassar Kurdi [Chicago]
“Multi-instrumentalist Muyassar Kurdi flits across the Chicago scene as a benevolent fixture of DIY shows, informal house jams, and magick rituals, glimpsed in the corner of a dim room swaying under a veil to the rhythms pouring from the PA. Her own solo output under her given name and the Humminbird moniker spans a wide range of drone, noise, and ambient experimentation, animated by her keening vocal delivery and the tones of her autoharp processed into sheets of reverbed caterwaul. Her irregular tunings and heavy effects manipulation render the autoharp an atonal self-accompanist, possessed of fine-grain details and a mix-consuming dynamic range that fixes our attention somewhere between claustrophobic discomfort and liberation. Kurdi’s voice escapes in a theatrical bellow that evokes Diamanda Galás’s plague mass invocations as it floats over the din in clear and ringing tones.”
-Tiny Mix Tapes

__Bradley Bailey [NYC]
throat singer, jazz guitarist, traveler extraordinaire

__Ricardo Iamuuri
“Ricardo Iamuuri Robinson is an audio visual artist. His work explores the relationship between sound, object and space. He is founder and owner of SONARCHEOLOGY STUDIOS, a recording studio dedicated to creating audio tours, Foley art, sound compositions, audio books and scores for film and theater. His work has been funded by The Pittsburgh Foundation and the Lyman Fund, and featured in the Emmy Award-winning documentaries In Country: Vietnam and Jim Crow Pennsylvania. He has also recorded & released two full-length albums: Conversations with Shepherds, Sheep, Guinea Pigs and Monkeys: Nursery Rhymes for the Underfed Minds, Vol. 1 and Conversations w/ Aliens, Automatons, Paper Kings and Plastic Dreams: Nursery Rhymes for the Unfettered Minds, Vol. 2. He is based in Pittsburgh, where he lives with his daughter, Amiel.”

__Mike Tamburo
“Pittsburgh’s Mike Tamburo (Brother Ong) is a multi- instrumentalist, who plays hammered dulcimer, shahi baaja, gong, guitar, autoharp, swarmandal and a slew of effects. He is greatly inspired by American folk and minimalist music traditions as well as Indian classical music.”

__Anna Azizzy
Exploring an inability to think, feel, or progress through sculpture, noise, and performance. Anna is studying Experimental Theater and Sculptural Performance at Carnegie Mellon University.

Muyassar Kurdi, Bradley Bailey, and Mike Tamburo will close out the night with an improvised trio.

The rules are simple: we select a theme, and participating producers dig for sample material within the spectrum to remix. We play this material for one-time use to give attendees something they cannot find online. Audio and visual source material are weaved together, bringing in visual themes which match the music. From Hollywood classics to obscure foreign films, we promise to bring you every explosion, synth and laser you can handle in one action-packed night.

Serving up originals and fresh, upbeat arrangements of urban dance tunes, the band deviously infuses the sounds of South-Eastern Europe with elements of funk, rock, and jazz. Thu May 8th NOW IS WHY presents AVANT GARDE CORE w/ Statas, Speak Onion, Redhat, Liability and Tropic @ Gus’s

By | events | No Comments

Wanted to get ahead of this and post about this show that’s happening in a week or so. Last year 8C had Speak Onion and Redhat play at Kopecs, and it was quite a blast. These guys are keeping the DIY breakcore scene rolling in their respective cities of New York and Philadelphia, and have been pushing things with great dedication and skill. On top of that, they got our pal STATAS, formerly NODAL TERROR of 215NOISE to come out on the road with them. This is as solid a representation of east cost breakcore as you’ll probably see any time soon, so make sure to stop down for this night. Gus’s is a rad spot as well with decent gluten-free bar food, space to dance or chill and a good selection of beers. Nice to have this night (run by Jason / Mind Tiger) in regular rotation. – cutups

tcrps presents a very rare evening of experimental improvised sound performance

Bromp Treb [solo percussion/electronics by Neil Young Cloaca of Fat Worm of Error: Turner Falls, MA]

Nick Hennies [solo percussion: Ithaca, NY]
Michael Johnsen [solo electronics: Pgh, PA]
Anthony Levin-Decanini [solo by Crucible Sound founder: Pgh, PA]

The Shop
4314 Main St.
Pittsburgh, PA 15224

BROMP TREB is the onomatopoeic flailings of Neil Young Cloaca. Composing and improvising with intentionally-unstable systems of his own devising, he joyfully uses/misues busted circuits, collaged beats, cheap effects pedals, poor drumming technique, and tape manipulation to make idiosyncratic music / nonmusic.

more BROMP TREB info:

Nick Hennies is a percussionist and composer from Louisville, KY currently residing in Ithaca, NY. His work is primarily concerned with an immersive, psychoacoustic presentation of sound brought about by an often grueling, endurance-based performance practice that Nathan Thomas of Fluid Radio described as, “a highly sophisticated and refined performance technique…that starts and ends with listening and encourages a different way of listening from its audience.” He received his M.A. in percussion from the University of California-San Diego in 2003 where he studied with renowned percussionist Steven Schick and is also a member of Meridian, a percussion trio with Tim Feeney and Greg Stuart. Prior to relocating to Ithaca Hennies was based in Austin, TX for ten years where he performed with the Austin New Music Co-op, The Weird Weeds and a variety of other projects.

Hennies is also an interpreter of the work of other modern composers having recorded and performed music by John Cage, Alvin Lucier, Jandek, Peter Ablinger, Kunsu Shim, Jürg Frey, Ellen Fullman, Radu Malfatti, Arnold Dreyblatt and many others. His work as both composer and performer can be heard on a wide variety of labels including Quakebasket, Senufo Editions, Accidie, Quiet Design and many others.

In 2013 Hennies also founded the record label Weighter Recordings for releasing his own work and other new and unusual music by living composers.
