Dame Fortune is the deliciously eclectic sixth album from veteran producer and crate digger extraordinaire RJD2, released March 25th on RJ’s Electrical Connections. It’s a wondrous beast, recorded over the past year while living in Philadelphia, before returning to his hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Streaked with Philly’s rep for deeply felt soul music while maintaining a playful sense of adventurousness, Dame Fortune features guest vocalists Son Little (aka Aaron Livingston) and frequent collaborator Phonte, while also presenting the bombastic hip-hop sound that marked RJD2’s breakthrough album, Deadringer, and even an orchestral composition for the societal unrest experienced in this day and age (called “PF Day One.”..the PF standing for “Post Ferguson”).

“Living in Philly provided a context for a lot of soul music that I had liked,” RJD2 says on the city’s influence on Dame Fortune’s sound. “I didn’t have any cultural context for this music that I liked — it was just music that I had stumbled across as a beat making nerd. Philly was a place where there were enough people who had the same musical vocabulary that I did, which made the music more than something I had just discovered on my own.”

The debut single, “Peace of What,” features Jordan Brown and draws inspiration from 1990s rap legends Main Source’s 1991 single “Peace Is Not the Word to Play.” “When I hear people talk of peace in America, the discrepancy between our words and our actions can get fatiguing,” he says on the inspiration behind the song. “I was trying to reflect the experience of people I know, which often feels like ‘We’re not ACTUALLY trying to do anything about this problem in our country.'”

Thought-provoking and undeniably entertaining all at once, this latest exhibition of musical virtuosity is a crystal-clear reflection of RJD2’s cinematic aspirations, reminding listeners that it’s always rewarding to expect the unexpected. RJD2 will tour throughout 2016 in support of Dame Fortune and his 20-year-plus-career.

Lateral & BxC Collective Present:

Ontal [DJ] (Mord Records / Ad Noiseam / Pi Electronics – π) – SERBIA

Duran Duran Duran [LIVE] (Tigerbeat6 / Cock Rock Disco / Power Vacuum) – BERLIN

Lateral returns with a late night affair featuring a DJ set from Serbia’s Ontal – best described as ‘focusing on the bleakest, blackest apocalyptic techno and grinding mechanoid rhythms’.

Duran Duran Duran joins us courtesy of our friends, BxC Collective. Concocting a malicious blend of Breakcore/IDM/Creepy Techno, DDD’s live set will be a welcome addition to the evening.

Expect an assault of the industrial strains of techno and the darker realms of the dancefloor for this one.

LAZERCRUNK is a club night that was founded in 2008 on the principle of bringing the best in fun, new, anything-goes bass music with touring and local guest performers, fun themes, live lazers and other wackyness in the club.

For 2017, we’ve decided to break out of the mold of the past several years, and alter our format to mix things up and bring some fresh energy. Going forward we’ll be having four quarterly nights at our original home base, BRILLOBOX (Mar, June, Sept, Dec) and four quarteryly nights at the original ultra-dive, BELVEDERES (Feb, May, Aug, Nov). We’re also re-dedicated to bringing in unique visuals and themes that you won’t see at any other regular event, as well as keeping pushing things forward with top quality guests, both touring and local. Beyond that, we’ll never take ourselves too seriously – LAZERCRUNK is all about letting loose and having fun.

More on SLICK SHOOTA
Slick Shoota is an Oslo-based producer known for producing high energy club hybrids. His productions take inspiration from a myriad of sources, among them Chicago’s footwork and the UK’s jungle and a host of other types of club music. With his productions he has carved out a unique sound that bridges both historical and geographical gaps, a sound that is well defined and exploratory at the same time.

Together with Skawr and Drippin he runs acclaimed club night and label Ball ‘Em Up, which has seen success in Norway, hosting performers like Sinjin Hawke and Zora Jones, Visionist, Jam City and Yung Lean. This eclectisism in the club night’s guests is also reflected in Slick’s performances, digging for tracks on the internet for hours on end to keep his sets unpredictable and entertaining.

Slick has received support from several notable producers and dj’s, like Scratcha DVA, Machinedrum, Oneman, B. Traits, Monki, DJ Spinn & DJ Rashad and the whole Teklife Crew. In November 2015 it was announced that Slick Shoota would join the legendary Teklife crew as an official member.

Slick Shoota has released music across top labels in the bass music scene, and been lauded as one of FACT Magazines favourite remixers and received a glowing review of the Mad Decent released single ‘F Dat’ on Pitchfork. In summer 2015, Slick Shoota joined Noisey for an installment in their ’48 Hour Mixtape’ documentary series. For two days he was joined by a camera crew, documenting his collaborations and productions with other producers and artists in Oslo. The resulting EP features collaborations with Drippin, Boska, Purpurr Purple and Samsaya.

More on KASTLE
Originally part of a small crop of American artists inspired by dubstep, garage, grime, jungle and other ‘nuum sounds, Kastle has transitioned through multiple aesthetic iterations since he burst into the popular consciousness 6+ years ago, fostering a thriving touring career, releasing a critically and commercially successful debut album, and heading up his own wildly successful label. Across several releases on his own Symbols label, the Los Angeles-resident has filtered hip hop and R&B through the aforementioned UK sounds, developing a sound rife with pop consciousness and a keen sense of melody, all while retaining a strong devotion to under-the-radar sounds.

In between playing festivals like Coachella, Decibel, Lightning In A Bottle and Burning Man, it’s remarkable that Kastle has had time for any other creative pursuits, but along with his own trailblazing production work, he also functions as an A&R, mixtape curator and tastemaker DJ. The rare musician with the fan base and clout to regularly play massive festivals and, at the same time, develop a visceral connection to the young artists that are likely to take the proverbial torch in the coming years. At Symbols, avant-garde releases aren’t the exception, but the rule and the label is now made up of a deep, diverse group of producers pushing American and UK sounds forward at a blistering pace.
Having extensively toured Europe, the UK, Australia and North America, Kastle has the wit and wherewithal to play large stages and tiny rooms, filtering leftfield bass music into his own idiosyncratic aesthetic. You’re just as likely to become engrossed in science fiction motifs as you are sweltering low end in a Kastle set and his forthcoming work sees the artist extend into ever more abstract, moving sonic space. And with ever-expanding curiosity in the worlds of tech and science, the concepts and ideations that make up Kastle’s songs don’t end when the song ends, instead continuing to make up his figurative and literal body of work.

Across best selling records, global tours and dozens of Symbols releases, Kastle has shown marked progression, his sound always developing around a core set of ideals. His output might not all sound the same, but a thread of never-ceasing evolution is present throughout, making Kastle one of America’s most indispensable contributions to the dance music continuum.
