Thu May 8th NOW IS WHY presents AVANT GARDE CORE w/ Statas, Speak Onion, Redhat, Liability and Tropic @ Gus’s

By | events | No Comments

Wanted to get ahead of this and post about this show that’s happening in a week or so. Last year 8C had Speak Onion and Redhat play at Kopecs, and it was quite a blast. These guys are keeping the DIY breakcore scene rolling in their respective cities of New York and Philadelphia, and have been pushing things with great dedication and skill. On top of that, they got our pal STATAS, formerly NODAL TERROR of 215NOISE to come out on the road with them. This is as solid a representation of east cost breakcore as you’ll probably see any time soon, so make sure to stop down for this night. Gus’s is a rad spot as well with decent gluten-free bar food, space to dance or chill and a good selection of beers. Nice to have this night (run by Jason / Mind Tiger) in regular rotation. – cutups

Week of April 27th: Blotter

By | blotter, events | No Comments

Managed to check out Wolf Eyes and Gothtrad this past friday. In a way I wish they could have literally dovetailed, as there were lots of points of resonance between them. Art All Night was also enjoyable in the way that it celebrates everybody’s talents on the same level without judgement. I’m so down with that. Shout out to Andres for making it even more fun.

Here’s what’s going on this week:

HOT DATE (Brooklyn)

Shayna Dulberger – upright bass, electronics (cellular chaos)
Chris Welcome – guitar, electronics (mothguts)

In search of the same sound, an upright bass no longer functions in the supporting role and a guitar is not used as a melodic or chordal instrument. An instrument is only a tool used to achieve the whole palette of sounds. All hierarchy of pitch, rhythm and form are abolished. Any structures that occur arise independently and organically. From the highest to lowest frequencies and from the purest tones to the noisiest textures, all are achievable.

Wolf Eyes was birthed in the shadows by a few liked minded individuals: Nate Young, Aaron Dilloway and John Olson in the late 90’s in Michigan. However, Wolf Eyes has become more than band, but a collective mutant ensemble, an art abstraction unit: musicians, print makers, photographers and more, all who share a primal shadowy vision of decoding the wilderness into the soul of humanoid from the deep audio arsenals. — The Wire UK

DEADBEAT (Berlin)

Deadbeat is someone we’ve all been looking forward to booking for quite some time. He is Scott Monteith, an adopted Berliner via Montreal who has been releasing his own special blend of dub laden, minimal electronics since 2000 for labels such as Cynosure, Intr_version, Revolver, and Scape.

He’s performed at some of the world’s most respected festivals, including Barcelona’s Sonar, Berlin’s Transmediale, and Montreal’s own Mutek. Whether crafting quirky techno, or rumbling heavy dub, Scott continually creates music that honors the past beyond empty tribute or cultural appropriation, by infusing the digital tools of the present with a little of the magic known as human imperfection.

CONTAINER (Providence)
Container, the Providence-based, noise-techno producer, and head of the cassette label ‘I Just Live Here’, is a staple in the American noise underground. Gaining recognition with ‘LP’, his vinyl debut released on Spectrum Spools, Ren Schofield is now a highly demanded artist whose singular brand of cacophonous, hardware-based techno is built around undulating tones, furious gabba-like speeds and slower rhythmic arrangements alike. Schofield’s part of a sonic dialogue includes American labels such as Future Times and L.I.E.S that help bridge the gap between noise and dance.

Be prepared to get weird.
