Week of Aug 16th – Blotter

By | blotter, events | No Comments

Well well well, another hot summer week of fun stuff. Last week was so much, tiring fun. Between ILLUSIONS tuesday, SWINDLE at Lazercrunk friday, and the SPAK Scavenger Hunt Sat-Sun, plus a few other things in the mix made the whole thing go super fast. No rest for the wicked – even more good stuff this week! I’ll be spinning tunes at the MONSTER TRIKE NIGHT on saturday – a mix of stadium rave anthems, hair metal, punk and other jams to get you into race mode.

Join us for a night of music with our special guest: Ariadne.

Ariadne is a sacred music duo based in Brooklyn, NY, comprised of Christine Lanx and Benjamin Forest. Their focus lies in the fixed framework of ritual interspersed with sacred and secular symbolism. Influenced by the canonical hours, their sound contains modern chant-like vocalises, Anglican choral textures, and percussive soundscapes in dense sonic textures. They are fascinated by juxtaposing themes, ancient structure and draw inspirations from mysticism and dystopian fantasies.

I slacked on these for a long time, but I’m looking to bring them back, along with a couple new projects that I’ll announce over the next several weeks.

First thing, I started a new forum. http://arcane.city

It’s open topic, moderated, and vaguely Pittsburgh based (for now). It’s based on the modern Discourse forum software, which is pretty nice.
Check it out, sign up, post away yr problems.

__Muyassar Kurdi [Chicago] “Multi-instrumentalist Muyassar Kurdi flits across the Chicago scene as a benevolent fixture of DIY shows, informal house jams, and magick rituals, glimpsed in the corner of a dim room swaying under a veil to the rhythms pouring from the PA. Her own solo output under her given name and the Humminbird moniker spans a wide range of drone, noise, and ambient experimentation, animated by her keening vocal delivery and the tones of her autoharp processed into sheets of reverbed caterwaul. Her irregular tunings and heavy effects manipulation render the autoharp an atonal self-accompanist, possessed of fine-grain details and a mix-consuming dynamic range that fixes our attention somewhere between claustrophobic discomfort and liberation. Kurdi’s voice escapes in a theatrical bellow that evokes Diamanda Galás’s plague mass invocations as it floats over the din in clear and ringing tones.”

Wreck League is a custom remix party series which takes particular themes within cinema and pop culture and brings them to the dance floor for a one-night show. The rules are simple: we select a theme, and participating producers dig for sample material within the spectrum to remix. We play this material for one-time use to give attendees something they cannot find online. Audio and visual source material are weaved together, bringing in visual themes which match the music. From Hollywood classics to obscure foreign films, we promise to bring you every explosion, synth and laser you can handle in one action-packed night.

✦ 4 hours of original music from 4 remixers, sourcing samples from vinyl/VHS/CD/DVD soundtracks of 1980s sci fi films

✦ FREE Wreck League: 8089SF soundtrack ONLY AT THE DOOR includes 1 hour of selections – the other 3 hours of original beats played live will not be available anywhere, so BE THERE!

Of course, the delicious late night menu will be offered, which is now a poutine menu, plus great drink specials as usual, to go along with the eclectic live mix I provide. A little Lykki Li mixed with some James Brown, and some Pharell thrown in for good measure. This monty I’ll be dropping in some Halloween jams too.

Week of October 19th: Blotter

By | blotter | No Comments

Looking at picking this back up as October is typically super busy and full of events. Being busy myself has put a hamper on knocking
these out every week. But here goes. Picks for what to get into this week:

TUESDAY

1015696_955262157834343_2104164614017425120_o

A once in a lifetime event for Steel City! Legendary Cold Meat Industry artists Brighter Death Now. Deutsch Nepal (Official) and Raison d’être (official) land on US shores. It’s a Swedish Invasion!

BRIGHTER DEATH NOW (Swe)
BDN is one of the single most influential industrial acts of the past two decades. Responsible for the coinage of the genre that is known as “death industrial”, Roger Karmanik — founder of the seminal record label COLD MEAT INDUSTRY — has provided the world with his own brand of cold, dismal and disgruntled power electronics/death industrial.

DEUTSCH NEPAL (Swe)
Herr Generalstaab Lina Baby Doll has been active as DEUTSCH NEPAL for more than two decades, having evolved over time into a sort of “industrial crooner”, standing at the front and belting out tribal anthems over martial rhythms. Cheers to the end!

raison d’être (Swe)
Peter Andersson stands as one of the most important artists working under the “dark ambient” monicker, crafting some of the genre’s most incredibly somber and emotionally charged work. Raison d’être is the sound of all hope nullified.

Requiem (US)
Pittsburgh native David Graham’s project Requiem has been active since the mid to late 90s, pulling in influences from all across the industrial board. Twisted and dense dark ambient industrial soundscapes.

Shock Frontier (US)
Pittsburgh and Ohio based dark ambient/death industrial released by Malignant Records. This will be their first official live performance. Music for a crumbling society and born from a hatred for the human animal.

SCHWARZ is a true inspirational club king for the future. On the mic he exists in a place between Andrew WK and Fatman Scoop. On the internet his original tracks and remixes reinvent genres and transcend contexts. He has been featured in SPIN, FACT, NOISEY and more.

ABDU ALI is a musician who raps, sings, and chants over unorthodox beats that smash together influences from club, noise and rap to create a singular style that feels fresh and boundless. Abdu Ali’s musical force has pushed him to be a must-see performer, delivering riveting and cathartic shows. He has been featured in THE FADER, STEREOGUM, COMPLEX and more.

KILBOURNE is an emerging club producer whose frenetic tracks and remixes are constantly pushing the limit of the dance world. She has done mixes for THUMP and DIS, while also playing guitar in hardcore punk/grind band Pyka.
Together on tour Schwarz, Kilbourne, and Abdu Ali, are an enchanting and dynamic trio, showcasing as compelling symbols of the current state of DIY club, punk, and rap culture. BE MOTIVATED.

+ FAUN AND A PAN FLUTE
(Mission Trips // Atlanta, GA)

http://faunandapanflute.bandcamp.com/

___ “Faun and a Pan flute are a 9-piece orchestral/experimental/psychedelic rock ensemble (incorporating marimba, cello, sax, tuba, etc) with an interest in sprawling composition and collective improvisation. They labor intensely to create pieces of music that are dynamic, challenging, and, they hope, beautiful… ” – Mission Trips

+ SMOKEY EMERY
(Kendra Steiner Editions, Holodeck Records // Austin, TX)

http://smokeyemery.bandcamp.com/

___ “Snippets of what appears to be drugged-out classical music, field recordings, short bursts of noise, and perhaps some recorded instrumentation all factor into the primordial ooze that Hipólito conjures forth from his array of loops. Suspenseful and subtle, the nine compositions unfold in a lumbering pace, like shifting tectonic plates… ” – Decoder Magazine

+ MAGICICADA
(Mission Trips, Public Guilt // Atlanta, GA)

http://www.imposemagazine.com/bytes/magicicada-once-i-was-a-little-light-mp3

___ “Magicicada is a solo experimental electronics artist whose sound has been described as a dark and ever-shifting sprawl of sounds presents a beautifully grotesque display. Jumping from macro-noise collages and spastic free improvisation to highly focused broadcasts of frazzled drone, White reveals his perfected hand in fine tuned post-production… ” – Bobby Power

THURSDAY JUNE 26 CHICHA LIBRE on Barbes Records from NYC.

Chicha Libre plays a mixture of latin rhythms, surf and psychedelic pop inspired by Peruvian music from Lima and the Amazon. The Brooklyn collective is made up of French, American, Venezuelan and Mexican musicians who mix up covers of Peruvian Chicha with original compositions in French, Spanish and English, re-interpretation of 70’s pop classics as well as cumbia versions of pieces by the likes of Satie, Love and Wagner.

Chicha is originally the name of a corn-based liquor favored by the Incas in pre-colombian days. Chicha is also the name of Peru’s particular brand of cumbia first made popular in the late 60’s.

Opening up will be Gena y Pena.

BRENMAR ****
New York City by way of Chicago producer and dj, BRENMAR represents a strange musical paradox. Somehow defying the odds, he marries the artificial gloss of commercial R’n’B and Hip Hop with the urban grittiness of underground dance music (Chicago ghetto house, UK bass, Jersey club). His remixes/edits/and productions have taken him to both coasts of the U.S., Canada, Japan, Mexico, Australia and the EU – frenzying crowds with his up-tempo, neon-drenched tunes. Always difficult to define, the elements that make up Brenmar’s music contain an extravagant medley of influences. Take a pinch of Mannie Fresh snares, a handful of DJ Rashad toms, a dose of basslines from the UK, a generous portion of Hot 97 vocalists, poach it all in a synthesizer broth, and garnish with some Timbaland sheen. You’re getting close.

http://brenmar.biz/

BOO LEAN ****
(aka Lauren G ) Co-founder of VIA, her dj sets are rumored to make a few azzs drop. Why she’s coming to the party as the Boo is still unknown.

http://www.via-pgh.com/

DJ BAMBOO ****
Vince Gancia is a young and talented performer. Classically trained in music, having played violin, guitar, and piano, his ear for music was formed at a very early age. Vince was a part of numerous state orchestra’s as well as participating in his school’s program for nine years. In college, he hosted his own radio show for two seasons. Bamboo has just recently stepped in Pittsburgh’s club scene, rocking lounges and nightclubs around the city every weekend. He has also competed in numerous DJ Battles across the country (1st place Combat DJ Battle Pittsburgh, 2nd place WATC/InkFest Live Washington DC, National finalist [4th overall] Coast2Coast DJ Battle Miami, Florida). Bamboo recently finished as 2nd runner up in the 2013 Red Bull Thre3style – Pittsburgh. With a great ear for music and eye for the crowd, Bamboo will definitely keep your dance floor packed. Week of June 15th: Blotter

By | blotter, events | No Comments

Took a week off to head to the beach and do other fun stuff. I’m actually tired of saying that relaxing is more tiring that working.
Had a super fun LAZERCRUNK this past friday with guest Shiftee, hit up Park Bruge, the Arts Fest, Ian Michael Black’s comedy show and the OJO ..er..’experience’ that Bricolage put together,
hung with the family for father’s day and capped it off with the Game of Thrones season finale. Couldn’t really ask for more.

Mostly avoided digital un-reality for the past week, but catching up on some goings on, here’s a few things I can recommend this week:

MONDAY

$4 – $5 Donation At Door For Touring Bands

+ EXTANT
(APT 421 Tapes, Vague Output // Baltimore, MD)

___ All-hardware electronic noise musician, Josh Laskin, emerges from the Baltimore underground on a brief tour of the east-coast. Exhibiting a wide array of textures, Laskin conjures sonic imagery that lies somewhere between ethereally busted and the utterly dismal.

+ DWAYNE RIFLE
(Firehazard Records // Pittsburgh, PA)

http://dwaynerifle.bandcamp.com/

___ Found object, broken instrument & tape improvisation.

+ MICAH BLACKWELL
(Pittsburgh, PA)

___ Well-versed in rhythms, noise (and pseudonyms), Micah Blackwell takes an unpredictable approach to sound, utilizing diverse set-ups and unique arrangements… expect the unexpected!

+ WASP NEST HEAD DRESS
(Turtle Creek, PA)

http://waspnestheaddress.bandcamp.com/

___ The claustrophobic harsh noise/ power electronics offerings of Eric Ross. In the words of the man himself, “depressing sounds presented by someone full of fucking nothing.”

+ BUOYHOOD
(Unknown Tone Records, Firehazard Records // West Mifflin, PA)

___ Improvised sound-collages and manipulated analog samplings from the buckled & dripping mind of Zach Katonik.

No shoes, no shirt, no problem- this is a pirate ship- that’s appropriate attire.

Luna Nox Deloun – Auditory Extremophiles – presented by 3rd Eye Squeegee

Pittsburgh, June 2nd, 2014: An excavation for new and mysterious sonic species is underway, deep in the unexplored dimensions of the auditory spectrum. Reports of an unclassified group of auditory organism based on a complex crystaline structure have begun to surface. Evidence suggests the psionic abilities of these bioluminescent extremophile organisms are beginning to influence the very researchers tasked with their safekeeping….

DARKWAVE night at Gus’s is every thursday with residents DJs Ez Lou (of the Upstage, etc) and Michael Midnight.
It’s a young night, but they generally are playing the darkwave jams like cure, sisters, depeche mode, creatures, etc.,
and are having guest djs every week or so. This week I’ll be guest djing, and with two hour long sets, I expect
to be able to play a good bit of deathrock, punk, postpunk, minimal wave, synth pop both old and new.

Gus’s is a cool spot in the middle of Lawrenceville, with food, good beers and an outdoor area. Cool spot to chill, especially if the weather is decent.

WHITE REEVES PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS:

SETH GRAHAM
[Orange Milk Records | Brooklyn]

http://sethgraham.bandcamp.com/

Seth Graham used to record as Henry Dawson but now goes under his birth name. He also used to be in a band way back that some of you may remember called Romance of Young Tigers. He now live in Brooklyn, NY and with Keith Rankin runs Orange Milk Records which was rated one of FACT Magazine’s Top 10 Labels of 2013. His collaborative album titled “Man Feelings” with Rankin under the name Cream Juice was rated the #1 Top Cassette (out of 200!) by Tabs Out. He also recently released a split with Flower Man (Chris Bush of the band Caboladies).

GIANT CLAW
[Orange Milk Records | Columbus, OH]

http://keithkawaii.com/

Tha amazing sound collage project of musician and visual artist Keith Rankin. He runs the label Orange Milk Records with Seth Graham and does much of the surreal and psychedelic artwork for the releases.

“The rapid-fire lines of Giant Claw that gain momentum like the proverbial snowball will one day engulf us all. Keith Rankin has been performing under the moniker Giant Claw for the past few years, amassing an impressive cassette haul on various labels including Orange Milk (a label he co-runs with partner and Cream Juice collaborator Seth Graham), Wool and Digitalis Industries, crafting surging, ever-ascending poems to 70s Kraut demigods and thus placing himself in the crest of a wave of recent synth revivalists married to repetition and melody. Rankin is also a member of Yakuza Heart Attack.”

—Ryan H. of Goldrush Music Festival [Denver, CO]

HUNTED CREATURES
[Pittsburgh, PA]

http://huntedcreatures.bandcamp.com/

This may be the last show for Hunted Creatures as the current line up (at least for quite some time). The band will likely continue but after some hiatus while members Micah and Ryan concentrate on their White Reeves project. Violinist and electronics player Amy will be off to pursue Grad School in Florida. It will be very sad to see her go… so come say goodbye, goodluck and congratulations to her! There are also plans to release a new album as a cassette with artwork by Robert Beatty. That should be out this summer!

STAGE HANDS
[My Idea of Fun | The Meets | Johnstown/Pittsburgh]

https://soundcloud.com/#miof/stage-hands-the-populating-of

“Stage Hands is the new project of My Idea of Fun and The Meets ringmaster Brandon Locher, playing alongside drummer and fellow Pennsylvania native Gerald Mattis. They’ve been together just a few months and with only one track circulating, but according to Locher they plan to begin sharing new tracks throughout the year. Their first single “Regardless,” shared by our friends at Impose Magazine, is a bouncy track that plays up Mattis’ drumming and a more elaborate production angle, though it bears mentioning this and their newest single both feature a certain Sean Jackson managing quite well on KORG duties.” — Decoder Magazine

Hello, Hello. Get excited to see one oddball of a film. I am going to give some really obvious hints here as to the what movie we are watching, but I can’t advertise what it’s going to be. Sorry.

What is a movie interruption? Similar to Mystery Science Theater 3000, or other series popping up around the country like, Doug Benson’s Movie Interruption or Master Pancake in Austin. We are going to watch a movie, a fantastical movie and we are going to make comments and jokes over top of it. It’s super fun, but only 4 of us will have microphones.

The film will start after 8, probably 8:20ish, but I will be doing an introduction starting at 8, some BIG PRIZES will be given away to a lucky few. GAMES, we’ll play some movie games and physical challenges. FREE BEER; for members of the Bayardstown Social Club.

ALSO: We will be grilling ZARDOGZ starting at 7:15. This is the big clue to what the film is.

GOLD SERIES :: every Friday at Round Corner Cantina

Reppin the Golden Era of Hip-Hop.

Headlining act Large Professor is up next with special guest Selecta (celebrating his 41st born-day) and local resident DJ Bamboo on Friday May 16th. .

$5 cover after 10PM
$5 Champagne special 9pm-2am

Large Professor, also known as Large Pro and Xtra P, is a New York City-based hip hop record producer and emcee. Large Professor is so involved with the history of hip-hop, it’s almost impossible to separate the two. He is also best known as a founding member of the influential underground hip hop group Main Source, and as mentor and frequent collaborator of Nas. He rapped and produced on Tribe’s Midnight Marauders, and co-crafted the sound of Illmatic. The list goes on: Kool G, Kane, Slick, Busta, Common. Whatever L.P. touches seems destined to become classic and through it all, like rap itself, this Queens auteur continues to push the movement forward. His third solo album Professor @ Large takes the Prof’s beloved boom-bap and reinvents it for a new school of students and practitioners alike.

ATROCITY EXHIBITION
Each year, Morose and Macabre’s House of Oddities brings together artists from around the country to take part in The Atrocity Exhibition, a bizarre night of performance and art that tells a horribly wonderful story. This years Exhibition is entitled “Museum of Dreams” and they invite you to experience a place that rests deep within slumber where the Sandman plays the curator of the Boogeyman’s collection of night terrors.
“We create a 360 degree living art installation with the most talented people we know” says Macabre Noir, co-founder of the event.

The Atrocity Exhibition is noted for its mix of unusual sideshow, cabaret, burlesque, and performance art, as well as its Artisan Market that features one of a kind handmade art for those of a darker sensibility.

We are proud to welcome PITTSBURGH TRACK AUTHORITY for their debut night as Hot Mass residents! And PTA is proud to bring you an artist that has been in the works for Pittsburgh for almost a decade:

RECLOOSE (New Zealand)

It all started in the spring of 1997 when Detroit native Matthew Chicoine, aka Recloose, made contact with techno pioneer Carl Craig by way of a legendary ‘demo-on-rye sandwich’. This fateful meeting led to the signing of Recloose to Craig’s seminal Planet E label and the birth of an eclectic and vibrant musical career.

Recloose’s musical roots trace back to eight years of studying music and playing jazz saxophone, later shifting his focus to the art of collecting and mixing vinyl while at the University of Michigan. His eclectic DJ sets, which were first heard on Ann Arbor’s WCBN, have led him to become an in-demand DJ, playing at clubs and festivals around the world as well as performing as a turntablist for both Carl Craig’s Innerzone Orchestra and the more esoteric Uri Caine ensemble.

Over his fifteen year career Recloose has developed into a true standout of Detroit’s musical litter. To date he has released a number of groundbreaking 12”s for Planet E and Rush Hour, a host of remixes for the likes of Funkadelic, Herbert, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Tei Towa, Dennis Coffey, MJ Cole and Azymuth, a live album, and three full-length LPs debuting with ‘Cardiology’‚ on Planet E / !K7 in 2002, greeted with wide critical acclaim.

http://www.pointnever.com/
http://nateboyce.net/

The a/v duo’s first return to Pittsburgh since playing the 2010 VIA Festival, they have toured together extensively performing at venues including MoMA/PS1, Walker Art Center, and Wexner Center for the Arts.

On tour supporting his his highly-praised, most recent release “R Plus Seven” acclaimed electronic musician and composer OPN assembles the sounds of corporate design – the sort found in commercial transitions, background music, and instructional videos – into songs that are as moving as they are conceptual. Awe, doom, and wonder arise from a range of referents – pipe organs and horns to the abstract, synthesized cues for soundtracked emotions.

Video artist Nate Boyce’s live improvised visuals consist of mutating CGI forms – appearing as modernist sculpture or consumer products – morphing in disorienting virtual space. Like OPN, he uses found text, the names of towns made enigmatic and website banners cut up and layered throughout like visual poetry.

+ + + OPENING SET by DUTCH E GERM + + +
http://www.dazeddigital.com/music/article/19129/1/stream-dutch-e-germs-awesome-in-rak-dust-here

Dutch E Germ’s music borrows bits from contemporary dance and rearranges them into forms that should be unwieldy but hold up anyway. Deconstructing rap tropes – his demolitions are intricate – every sound is purposeful and clear, executed with the uncomfortable brightness of vapourwave aesthetics. – Resident Advisor

“Starting out drumming hardcore punk in mid-90s Washington DC, his band Gang Gang Dance released some of underground rock’s most awesome statements. With Lizzie Bougatsos and Brian DeGraw, he vitalised the staid DIY / indie scene with total rhythmic radicalism, world musical parity and lots of hallucinogenics and far-out ideas.” – Dummy Mag

Week of April 27th: Blotter

By | blotter, events | No Comments

Managed to check out Wolf Eyes and Gothtrad this past friday. In a way I wish they could have literally dovetailed, as there were lots of points of resonance between them. Art All Night was also enjoyable in the way that it celebrates everybody’s talents on the same level without judgement. I’m so down with that. Shout out to Andres for making it even more fun.

Here’s what’s going on this week:

HOT DATE (Brooklyn)

http://talkingskullmtl.bandcamp.com/album/ts007-hot-date-hot-date-2

Shayna Dulberger – upright bass, electronics (cellular chaos)
Chris Welcome – guitar, electronics (mothguts)

In search of the same sound, an upright bass no longer functions in the supporting role and a guitar is not used as a melodic or chordal instrument. An instrument is only a tool used to achieve the whole palette of sounds. All hierarchy of pitch, rhythm and form are abolished. Any structures that occur arise independently and organically. From the highest to lowest frequencies and from the purest tones to the noisiest textures, all are achievable.

“Early 8cylinder material was fast, aggressive breakcore — “people would move to it; it’s not really dancing, it’s more of a freak-out kind of thing” — but the most recent 8cylinder releases are more downtempo and cerebral. There are beats, but there’s also noise and sound sculpture.” – PGH CityPaper
